How to Make a Catio

While I like to think that I stay up to date on most new things in the feline world, I have to be honest that I thought I was seeing a foreign language when a teammate sent the word “Catio” my way in an email. While we’ve covered ways to have fun in the sun with your furry friends in posts like Frozen Treats for Your Pet! and Summer with Pets, Catios are a unique way to provide some enrichment for your cat during the warmer months that we have yet to discuss! Although there isn’t a historical timeline to note an exact start date for the Catio craze, in recent years the term has certainly grown in familiarity among feline lovers.

So what is this “Catio” we speak of? Put simply, a Catio is an enclosed outdoor space where a cat can enjoy physical activity and mental enrichment while staying safe from danger. If this sounds like just the thing to enrich your feline companion’s life, you’re in the right place! Let’s take a look at some key things you’ll need to build a Catio that your feline will love from designer and founder of Catio Spaces, Cythia Chomos:

The Basics

Don’t let the term “basics” throw you off, a Catio can be as simple or elaborate as resources allow. For our discussion today we’ll focus on the simple components needed to create an enriching space for your cat…

Location – Perhaps most important when creating this rewarding new space for your feline is determining where the Catio will be located. The ideal location will offer both sun and shade, a level and secure base, and a stimulating view of the surrounding environment. And if space is ample, a larger 6×8 or even 8×10 foot screened in area allows both a cat parent and feline to enjoy the Catio together.

Components – Quality wood framing is essential for the job. As for size, cats do well in small spaces with multiple levels and adequate room for essentials like water or a litter box. Making the space easily accessible with a cat door or entryway through an exterior house window also offers cats the freedom to enter at their pleasure. Wire mesh attached to framing with a staple gun provides containment as well, and a roof made of polycarbonate material can provide added protection. Flooring can be covered with outdoor carpeting, and some ground-based Catio’s even feature brick or paver flooring.

Accessories/Enrichment – In addition to necessary components, Catio’s offer endless possibilities for fun accessories. From toys, items for scratching, or cat-safe plants, the possibilities are endless to make the Catio your cats’ own! Keeping in mind that cats love to climb and find perches for resting or a sweeping view, multiple levels can be created with shelving.

Takeaway

Hopefully after our discussion you have a better understanding of what exactly a Catio is and the benefits a cat can get from these great structures!
