With the expansion in food options available to pet parents, many observers have probably noticed the use of unique or novel proteins. A novel protein is simply a protein source that the pet hasn’t been exposed to before. Generally, proteins such as venison, duck, rabbit, kangaroo, and even insect sources are considered novel for their rarity in commercial diets. The appeal of novel protein diets comes from a pet’s immune system not having previously developed an allergy to the protein, resulting in an immune system reaction.
